What is a Scholarship?

A scholarship is money given to you to help pay for your education or related expenses. Scholarships come from a variety of sources, such as your college or a private organization.

Examples of types of scholarships:

  • Merit scholarships are based on a student's achievements.
  • School scholarships are given to students by the school they attend.
  • Work scholarships require students to work to receive scholarship money.
  • Field of Study scholarships are given to students pursuing a specific field of study or academic program.
  • Need scholarships are based on financial need.

Time Sensitive Scholarships

We encourage you to do your own research to find other scholarship opportunities. Remember that you should never have to pay for a scholarship. Any scholarship that costs you money is probably a scam.

Honors Scholarship

Learn about the Honors Scholarship

Each year The Honors Program awards a scholarship for the best paper written in one of its seminars. Any student in an honors seminar held during the current academic year may submit a seminar paper for consideration. Submissions will judged by a panel comprised of faculty and administrators. The winning student will receive a scholarship, a certificate of award, and recognition during the college's annual Honors and Awards Ceremony. In past years, the amount of the scholarship has been $500.

Scholarship Procedures and Judging Criteria

  • The paper was written in and for an honors seminar during the scholarship school year
  • While the paper may be on any topic addressed in a CRC honors seminar, it must be a work of scholarly non-fiction
  • The paper must be the student's original work with all sources cited
  • The competition must receive at least three entries or no scholarship will be awarded for this year
  • Deadline for the competition: TBA

  • The paper must be submitted with a cover sheet with the student's name, the title of the seminar, the professor's name, and the semester the seminar was offered.
  • The student's name should only appear on the title page.
  • All papers must be typed and double-spaced.

Judging Criteria:

  • Clarity of thought and presentation
  • Objective, in-depth analysis of a topic
  • Application of pertinent theory and/or research
  • Effective development and support of the writer's position or argument
  • Evidence of original work
  • Appropriate citations and documentation of source material

Please submit manuscripts to: Rick Schubert's mailbox in the Humanities and Social Sciences area office. No email submissions will be accepted. Should you have any questions, please contact Dr. Schubert at (916) 691-7494 or
