Twendeni Zetu Tanzania Fund
(Let’s All Go to Tanzania Fund)
The Twendeni Zetu Tanzania Fund was established to provide CRC and other Los Rios Community College students with a cost-free opportunity to study abroad in Tanzania. Our deeply transformative study abroad experience, which will be offered for the first time during the summer of 2024, provides immense opportunity for academic, intellectual, professional, and personal growth. In addition, for students of African ancestry, studying abroad in Africa takes on an even deeper level of significance, as it affords students a chance to return “home” and gain a deep sense of cultural pride that breeds self-confidence, self-love, and self-actualization. This nature, culture, and heritage-focused experience will help all students who participate to become better leaders in their communities and will give them the tools to make a positive impact on the world. Upon completion of the program, students will earn 12 units of transfer credit to the CSU system, training in Swahili, which is deemed a “critical language” by the U.S. Department of State, and a multitude of rich academic, intellectual, cultural, and personal experiences leading to positive transformation and growth.
Unfortunately, when it comes to studying abroad, many of our students lack the financial resources to make an incredible opportunity like our Tanzania program a reality. We are reaching out to individuals and organizations to ask for help in raising the funds necessary to make this trip possible for students at zero cost to them.
We are seeking to raise our program budget of $215,686 ($11,983 per student) by January 12, 2024. These funds will cover the cost of tuition, airfare, program activities, housing, meals, and other expenses associated with the trip. Your generous donation will help us provide this life-changing opportunity to our students, who will benefit in many ways from this experience.
Some of the benefits of this study abroad opportunity for students include:
- Developing a deeper understanding of their cultural heritage and history through lectures, talks, and cultural events given by experts and community members
- Gaining a global perspective on issues impacting Black communities
- Building cross-cultural competencies and communication skills
- Gaining beginner-intermediate proficiency in the Kiswahili language, an East African language that is emerging as the lingua franca of the entire continent
- Enhancing their academic and career opportunities through experiential learning
- Learning how to design and implement their own independent study projects
- Acquiring research, interview, and fieldwork skills through independent study projects and other activities
- Creating a lifelong connection to Africa and the African Diaspora
- Building character, gaining a global critical perspective on adversity, and developing bonds with local communities through service learning
Your support will make it possible for historically underrepresented students and students lacking financial resources to embark on a journey that will change their lives and open doors for them academically, personally, and professionally. This experience will help them to be better leaders in their communities and will give them the tools to make a positive impact on the world.
