The Honors Program is designed for academically accomplished students or those with the potential for high academic achievement. The program provides enhanced General Education study opportunities that support intellectual growth, scholarly relationships with peers, and faculty-student engagement beyond that generally associated with lower-division undergraduate programs. Honors Program participation supports transfer and scholarship opportunities at select transfer colleges and universities – including UCLA, in whose Transfer Alliance Partnership CRC is a member. Honors Program students receive enhanced access to career and academic advising as well as enhanced opportunities for scholarship, including the opportunity to pursue their own original research.

Important Information Regarding the Honors Program

Eligibility for Honors

The Honors Program is a restricted admissions program; only students admitted to the Honors Program are eligible to complete Honors courses. Prospective Honors students should possess the ability to think and work independently, to write clearly and purposefully, and to cooperate in the spirit of discovery and understanding. The Honors Program encourages applications from all interested students and enrolls individuals into the program based on evidence of their potential to benefit from, and contribute to, an Honors learning environment. We ask that students provide us with information that demonstrates their interest, motivation, preparation and potential for this form of study.

Honors Program applications are given careful review by the Honors Admissions Committee to determine applicants’ suitability for Honors study. You must be accepted to the Honors Program before you can receive credit for any Honors coursework. Honors Program applications are accepted at any time. You may enroll in your first Honors course(s) and apply to the Honors simultaneously, although we recommend this approach only for students who are clearly eligible for admission to the program. You must be accepted into the Honors program by no later than the third week of instruction for the term in which you are first enrolled in Honors in order to remain enrolled and receive credit in your Honors courses.

Eligibility for the CRC Honors Program can be established in several ways:

HONORS PATHWAY ONE: Students who have completed at least 12 transfer-level college units are eligible if they have a minimum 3.0 GPA and are eligible for, or have successfully completed, ENGWR 300.

HONORS PATHWAY TWO: Students who have completed less than 12 transfer-level college units are eligible if they have a minimum 3.0 high school GPA and at least one of the following:

  • a grade of B or better in AP-preparatory Honors English
  • a grade of B or better in AP or IB English
  • a score of 4 or 5 on the AP English Language and Composition Exam.

HONORS PATHWAY THREE (CHALLENGE PATHWAY): Any student is eligible for the Honors Program if they submit a successful Honors Program Challenge Application, demonstrating to the satisfaction of the Honors Admissions Committee their interest, motivation, preparation and potential for Honors Program study.

Students approaching Honors via Pathway Three (Challenge Pathway) have the option of applying for either Restricted Admission (special permission to take a limited number of Honors courses) or General Admission (unlimited permission to take any Honors course whose course-level prerequisites, if any, they also satisfy). Students who assess into ENGWR 480 (Honors College Composition) or STAT 480 are guaranteed restricted admission to HONOR 375/ ENGWR 480 or HONOR 393/STAT 480, respectively (although students who assess in either of these ways are also welcome to apply for General Admission if they believe they qualify). Restricted Admission is also an excellent option for students who are unsure as to whether Honors study is for them, or whose application suggests, but does not clearly establish, their suitability for the Honors Program. Students granted Restricted Admission who go on to succeed in their Honors course(s) are eligible to apply for General Admission.

There is no GPA requirement for admission to the CRC Honors Program. Although two of the three pathways into the Honors Program (Pathway One and Pathway Two) have GPA requirements, the third (Pathway Three/The Challenge Pathway) does not. Unlike many Honors Programs, the Cosumnes River Honors Program is specifically designed not only for academically accomplished students but also for students with the potential for high achievement, whether or not they've realized that potential already. Some students need an Honors environment before they realize their full potential as scholars and CRC's Honors Program gives these students a chance at high achievement. It also provides academically accomplished students a place to continue to grow and excel.

Honors Lecture Courses

Honors lecture courses rigorously address topics within the general curriculum and satisfy specific general education requirements at CRC, California State University campuses, and the University of California. They provide the same benefits as ordinary general education courses, but offer opportunities for additional intellectual growth and greater faculty-student engagement as well.

Current Honors lecture course offerings include HONOR 366: Recent U.S. History, HONOR 367: Introduction to Government: United States, HONOR 375: College Composition, HONOR 378: Literature Adapted into Film, and HONOR 393: Introduction to Probability and Statistics.

Honors Seminar Courses

Honors seminars comprise the heart of the CRC Honors Program experience. Modeled on the freshman and sophomore seminars at the University of California, they provide the same opportunities for CRC students: experience in a small, rigorous course that challenges them to do bold, original, and creative thinking, confront cutting-edge theories and primary research, and express themselves in classroom exchanges and critical papers. In ordinary lecture classes, faculty are almost exclusively responsible for delivering curriculum to students. In seminars, students share this responsibility with the faculty and become highly active participants in the teaching-learning process. Seminar students are expected to research issues of critical relevance to their course of study and present their findings for seminar discussion. Honors seminars are often interdisciplinary in nature and present advanced topics outside or beyond the general curriculum. Wherever possible, these seminars make use of off-campus activities such as field trips to academic and cultural events to further enhance the learning experience. The CRC Honors Program offers both one- and three-unit seminars.

The 3-Unit Seminars. These courses offer a semester-long seminar experience and are created to satisfy specific general education requirements at CRC, California State University campuses, and the University of California.

Current 3-unit Honors seminar offerings include HONOR 340: Political Campaign Communication, HONOR 341: Persuasion within Social Issues, HONOR 350: Introduction to Critical Theory, HONOR 364: Philosophy of the Martial Arts

The 1-Unit Seminars. These courses are intensive and provide the seminar experience over four to six weeks. One-unit seminars provide significant opportunities for educational enrichment but do not satisfy specific general education requirements at CRC, California State University campuses, or the University of California.

Current 1-unit Honors seminar offerings include HONOR 391: Introduction to Mathematical Proof and HONOR 392: Topics in Number Theory.

Honors Program Continuation Requirements

To continue in the CRC Honors Program from one academic year to the next (i.e. from 2021-22 to 2022-23 and forward), students who have been granted General Admission to the Program must: 

  1. enroll in, and successfully complete, at least one Honors course per regular term (fall and spring semester) or be granted a waiver (Course Enrollment Requirement
  2. maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher or undergo a successful qualitative review (Academic Standing Requirement
  3. complete a minimum of five hours of program-approved academic enrichment activity per academic year (Academic Enrichment Requirement

Note: The first of these requirements (i.e. (1) above) applies only until a student completes the 15-unit Honors Certificate that is the basis of some enhanced transfer opportunities. For example, completion of the Honors Certificate with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher qualifies an Honors student for priority admission to UCLA’s College of Letters and Science through the UCLA Transfer Alliance Program (UCLA TAP). UCLA TAP applicants have an approximately 300% higher rate of acceptance to UCLA’s College of Letters and Science than students who apply without the benefit of participation in the program. To participate in UCLA TAP transfer, an Honors student must satisfy the Program Continuation Requirements during each year they participate in the Honors Program. 

Note: The second and third requirement (i.e. (2) and (3) above) apply to all CRC Honors Program students even if they have completed the Honors Certificate. 

Note: Successful qualitative review mirrors the Honors Admissions Pathway Three General Admission program application process. Students who select this option will need to submit a personal statement and supporting information on the basis of which the Honors Program will determine whether the student will remain in good standing with the program. Note that students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher need not complete (and are not eligible for) qualitative review. 

Note: Attendance at any Honors Program event, of which there are 2-3 each semester, counts towards the satisfaction of the academic enrichment activity requirement. The Program hopes every Honors student will attend these events. However, approved academic enrichment activities are not limited to attending Honors Program events. Attendance at the annual CRC-CPPE Fall Ethics Symposium (co-sponsored by the Honors Program) also counts towards the satisfaction of the academic enrichment activity requirement. Attendance at any CRC Transfer Center event (but not individual meetings with transfer representatives) counts towards the satisfaction of the academic enrichment activity requirement. Additional activities, which are judged on a case-by-case basis, may be accepted by successful petition. 

Enhanced Transfer Opportunity Program

The Cosumnes River Honors Program is designed specifically for academically accomplished students and for those students with the potential for high achievement. The program provides opportunities for intellectual growth, beyond those generally found in most undergraduate programs, through special Honors courses. Designed to offer motivated students a chance to build for themselves an outstanding freshman and sophomore education, these special one- to three-unit courses have a limited enrollment, providing students with an enhanced opportunity to work closely with faculty and to build relationships with fellow students. Honors study supports students in doing original work, enjoying in-depth exploration, and pursuing matters of special interest to them.

Beyond the courses it offers, the CRC Honors Program provides academic and personal support through individualized counseling, academic advising, and faculty mentorship. It provides enhanced admissions support for transfer and for subsequent graduate-level study. In addition, the program offers field-trips, social gatherings, and special events including conferences and symposia.

The CRC Honors Program is a restricted admissions program; you must successfully apply to the program in order to participate in it. The program encourages applications from all interested students and admits individuals based on evidence of their potential to benefit from, and contribute to, an Honors learning environment.

Students who complete a total of 15 units or more in honors-designated courses are eligible for special recognition as an Honors Scholar, a distinction that entitles the student to enhanced transfer and scholarship opportunities at select transfer colleges and universities, including UCLA, in whose Transfer Alliance Partnership CRC is a member.

Honors Research Symposium and Honors Scholarship

Symposium and Scholarship Details

CRC is hosting its second annual Honors Research Symposium, Friday, May 6, 2022, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm via Zoom!

To have your work considered for presentation, you must be a current CRC Honors Program student and must:

  1. Submit an abstract (of 150-250 words) of either:
    • a finished paper written for, or a seminar presentation that was delivered to, a CRC Honors course, or
    • an abstract (of 150-250 words) for a work-in-progress from a CRC Honors course
  2. Have your submission endorsed by the member of the Honors faculty for whom you wrote the paper, gave the presentation, or are developing the relevant work-in-progress.

Dates and Details

  • Abstract submission deadline: Friday, April 22, 2022
  • Selection notification via email: Friday, April 29, 2022
  • If selected, students will be invited to give a five-minute "work-in-progress" or a 10-15-minute "finished research project" presentation. Presentations will be followed by responses from panelists.
  • Limit of one submission and one presentation per student.

The best "work-in-progress" presentation will be awarded a $250 scholarship, a certificate of award, and recognition during the Honors Program's annual awards ceremony. The best "finished research project" presentation will be awarded a $500 scholarship, a certificate of award, and recognition during the Honors Program's annual awards ceremony.
