Sacramento County Programs

Independent Living Program and Extended Foster Care is a federally funded program which assists current and former foster youth between the ages of 16 and 21 achieve self sufficiency prior to, and after, exiting the foster care system.

Financial Aid

The Chafee Grant is for eligible foster care youth and may include up to $5,000 a year for career training or college. See CRC's Financial Aid office for more information.

Community Support

  • California Youth Connection (CYC) is a youth-led organization that develops leaders who empower each other and their communities to transform the foster care system through legislative, policy, and practice change.
  • Wind Youth Services provides supportive services and opportunities to youth experiencing homelessness as they pursue self-determined lives of stability and independence.
  • Something Special helps children prepare for their emancipation from the foster care system by supporting efforts during their teen years to develop their interests and talents in music, the arts, and athletics.
  • The Sacramento LGBT Community Center is a safe haven for youth, offering counseling, health services, and drop-in spots seven days a week.
  • The Sacramento LGBTQ Foster Youth Task Force helps foster youth in the LGBTQ community find support, stability, and acceptance.
  • The Gender Health Center is a non-profit organization meeting the counseling needs of Sacramento and the surrounding areas by making our services accessible to the most underserved communities, including the LGBTQQI community and focusing on the "T" or transgender.

Housing

The Transitional Housing for Former Foster Youth program is organized by Volunteers of America and provides affordable housing and comprehensive supportive services for up to 24 months to help former foster care and probation youth ages 18 to 24 make successful transition from the child welfare system to independent living.

Food and Health Services

  • FoodPantries.org provides a list of pantries and information on food closets, food banks, soup kitchens, congregate meal locations, food boxes, and vouchers.
  • River City Food Bank provides healthy emergency food and other assistance to those in need.
  • Covered 'Til 26 details the medical coverage foster youth can receive through Medi-Cal.
