Travis Parker
Coach 1972–2003
Travis Parker ran track for two years in high school at Franklin of Stockton and one year at Sacramento High School. In 1964, he attended Sacramento City College, where he was a member of the cross country and track team and was named the Most Inspirational runner. He transferred to California State University, Sacramento in 1968 and was the captain of the track team. His team won the conference and Travis was named a D-II All American. He received his degree in Physical Education with an emphasis in Sociology in 1970. Travis transferred to Western Illinois University where he earned a MA in Education with a specialty in Physical Education in 1972. While working on his master’s, his first coaching job was at East St. Louis Senior High School as the cross country coach.
In 1972, Travis moved back to California to become the head cross
country coach at Cosumnes River College. He coached cross county from 1972-1978. From 1973-1983, Travis was the assistant track and field coach under Dick Cristofani. In 1979, he became the head Men’s Soccer coach, a position he held until 1999. In 2001, he became the head Women’s Soccer coach and held that position until 2003. In all, Travis coached a total of
29 years and 43 seasons of sport at Cosumnes River College.
All of the team’s that Travis coached were successful. In 1973 and 1975,
the cross country team was third place in Division II at the NorCal Regionals. The track team placed third in the 1974 NorCal Relays in Division II, they were the team champions at the 1976 Wood Wilson Relays and were the 1977 Valley Conference Champions. The men’s soccer team won the 1979 Valley Conference championship, the 1980, 1981, and 1982 Camino Norte championship. They were also the 1990 Golden Gate
Conference champions, and the 1991 Bay Valley Conference champions. His 1982 soccer team placed 2nd in the state and his 1983 team was named the Sacramento Bee’s Hall of Fame Outstanding Soccer Team.
Travis has won numerous awards for his coaching accomplishments including: 1983 Sacramento Bee’s Hall of Fame Outstanding Soccer Coach, 1994 California Coaches Association Community College Coach of the Year, 1994 National Soccer Coaches Association of America and Umbro Coach of the Year for Junior College Men’s Western Region, and 1999 Northern California Soccer Coaches Association award for service and dedication. He is a member of the California Black Athletic Hall of Fame and in 2006; Travis was inducted into the California Community College Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame.
Today, Travis is still teaching at CRC. He teaches Boot Camp fitness as well as Contemporary issues of Today’s Athletes. He is instrumental in the push for one of our athletic teams to be an Academic State Champion.
Travis lives in Elk Grove with his wife Velma and they have two daughters, Carolee and Jana.
